VIVO-IV Therapy Course

The VIVO IV Therapy course is designed to prepare qualified Nurses/Paramedic to perform the expanded role of IV therapy as outlined in the Nursing Practice Law, Rules and Regulations.
The clinical portion of this course is designed to develop proficiency in IV therapy according to the scope of practice

Intended Audience

EMS Personnel, ANM, GNM, B.Sc. Nursing and Physicians.

Goals and Objectives

At the completion this course, the participant shall be able to:

Legal implications of IV therapy

Identify and locate peripheral veins and its importance

Identify IV equipment used in administering IV solutions; criteria for use, and list precautions and complications of each

Nursing care of the patient with an IV infusion

Fluid and electrolyte balance in relation to IV therapy

Classifications of IV fluids

Aseptic technique in IV therapy

Compare and contrast the complications of IV infusions, their prevention, and nursing interventions

Apply correct principles for administering IV antibiotics and calculating drug doses

Review of Anatomy and Physiology

Fluid and Electrolyte Balance

Equipment and Procedures in Iv Therapy

Complications, Prevention, and Nursing Interventions

Hands on skill stations include

Correctly initiate peripheral IV therapy

Correctly calculate prescribed IV infusion rate.

Provide ongoing care to the IV site.

Maintain patency of peripheral IV therapy lines using a flush solution

Observe and report patient responses to IV therapy.

Report, record and properly respond to complications or contraindications of IV therapy

Discontinue peripheral IV therapy.
